Where do USR riders come in?
We require USR riders to assist in running out Dealer Demo ride outs
To assist pleasecontact :-

Wynne why dont you take the lead on this.
Go along find out what they have in mind, how many USR's they need and have they sorted a route out. It maybe a commercial enterprise, if so they should pay the USR's expenses.
We have done this several times before for P & H motorcycles and also we did if for M V Augusta a couple of years ago when they did a european tour.
STEM
Pleased to assist.
All volunteers please contact myself.
Many thanks
What does "We require USR riders to assist in running out Dealer Demo ride outs " actually mean?
Dealers allow the demo bikes to be taken out on a set route whilst been accompanied by a USR - ROUTE yet to be decided
Similar to what we did at Ally Pally a few years ago for MV Augusta, they provided the bikes though Brutale's.
So it is a set route and the riders are lead? Just trying to classify what is involved as I know how some people behave when let loose on a demo bike and don't want to be anywhere near them!
Previously there has been two routes (short n long) we both lead and tail-end each of the rides. The companies that are organising the ride can insist you use their bikes.
That was what I was hoping for. You mean the USRs ride their bikes also?
Yep when we did it for M V Augusta I had a go on the bosses £18k Brutale really nice bit of kit :) and a bit quick.
Most of those manufacturers have new auto models out this spring ...
John J and I met with Mark and Wynne on Saturday, this is the plan.
The observed rides will leave at hourly intervals (10am -3pm) - they hope to have 10 riders per hour session, ideally split into five groups of 2 with a USR leading and a Senior Observer (LAM or KAMG) at the back - so a total of 4 on the road per group.
To make sure the groups don't tangle with each other, 2 groups will set off in opposite directions, the next group will set off aprox 5 mins later. The senior Observers are first aid trained (LAM obs. are, I think KAMG are too), so there will be assistance from them if required
5 USR's would be needed for each hourly trip, would be good to have 10 or even more if possible - give time for the first group to rest before heading off again.
We have been asked whilst not on the ride if we can 'assist' by walking about the show looking official. The car park will be run by the local youth on bikes program, CABS (http://www.cydt.org.uk/croydon-auto-bike-scheme/ (http://www.cydt.org.uk/croydon-auto-bike-scheme/)).
The route is about 40 mins and we will be given the route plan ahead of time â€" map and gpx/itn formats. Can arrange a suitable time to do a sighting lap.
Event opens to the public at 10am, we have been asked to assemble by 9am for a briefing.
As has been mentioned there are demo bikes available for people to ride, these are under the control of the dealers and the usual indemnity / deposit etc. which they have in place applies. If there is enough interest in riding a demo, we could ask if we could have a final lap ride on a dealer bike.
Please can you post up if you are able to assist? You might only be able to assist for a few hours; all help would be greatly appreciated.
The organisers do not know how many people will attend, however there is a limit to the number of people on the ride-outs so that will be under control, the worst thing for us is if it is under-subscribed and we may have a wait a while before the next outing.
As Steve says, we had a good meeting with Mark following our Machine Control day. He made it clear that he is very keen to have our involvement to assist in the smooth running of this event.
We did ask about the financial status of the event and were informed that this is a non profit making event with all costs being met by the participtants.
Julian,
apparently, the new BMW 650cc auto will be there. This will be before it even hits the dealers!
JJ
Guys sounds like you had a good meeting and MCD.
Ok let's get together a list of USR's that can attend. I will ask Pen if she would kindly send out an email to those that don't visit this forum.

We're a tad thin on the ground for this event....anyone else?
John
Sorry, yet again can't assist - it's the day before the start of the 2012 Scooter Cannonball Run:
http://www.scootercannonball.com/ (http://www.scootercannonball.com/) <<< just to rub it in. :P
Hmmmmm........ haven't you got a bus pass to pick up on this side of the pond?
Happy birthday for the other day!!
JJ
I'd love to help, but sadly I'm over 80 miles away and am working from 5.30 - 2.30am :(
Graham
It appears that no-one from the organising committee or LAM contacted KAMG who have an On the Road Workshop that day for trainee Observers which need 6 Senior Observers, including myself, there is also a Machine Control Day needing 6 Observers and KAMG were only alerted when I forwarded details of this event via Google Groups last month.
Ian Burchell who is our Deputy Chief Observer is also on the Bikesafe Team who will be attending this event and has tried in the last week to drum up responses from Observers, but we also are thin on the ground.
It is a shame, but I was rather hoping Ruth McConnell Chairman from LAM would have liaised with our Chairman so this could have been co-ordinated more effectively. :(
I've had replies from two other people who may be able to help for part of it, but that's it.
Sorry we're already booked that weekend elsewhere.
Morning Christine
Mark Jaffe is an obs with Lam and Wynne is with Lam too,as you know.
I believe Lam cmte are aware of this event (I wasnt at the meet)
However its the same day as one of our events in Bromley :-(
You also state that their is a KAMG event scheduled too.....
Bad timing, what else can we do ?
I'll send out another request for help
I will check with Mark as to the response he has had. If there won't be very many Senior Observers, then there won't be many observed rides.
There will be about 6 observers and would be great if we could match with 6 USR's. If not then there will be fewer groups going out, pretty much a case of 'working it out' on the day.
I may be able to help but being so busy on so many fronts can't commit yet!
Have we a confirmed route yet and are we going to ride it before we start the rideouts?
Hi all,
IF USR's can be there for 0845 ready for a 0900 briefing and ride out. We will take them on the route and get back ready for the first rides at just after 10.00
I will gladly send a route to all who require to pre programme Tom Tom or Garmin.
Please e mail me on w_pritchard@btinternet.com and I will return to you.
Look forward to seeing you all on the day - bring your sun cream or umbrella!
Where exactly shall we all meet?

Sorry I meant at the gate or inside event?
Im learning how to program itineraries into TomTom using TYRE software so I'd like a route please.
either here or to my email.
s.marsh@ucl.ac.uk
All area zoned off so we should be easy to pick out as well as two 40' trailers - I will be on site from 06.30am, hopefully dry.
Look forward to seeing USR's on the day, thanks in advance.
As it stands, I think I'm out for tomorrow.
Riding home from work this evening I had a BMW driving a@hole try and kill me and my back is badly wrenched from keeping the bike upright from where he nudged me and tried to push me into an oncoming bus.
Sorry
John
Sorry to hear that John hope you feel better......my prescription would be couple of beers
and a takeaway curry and you should feel better in the morning.
See you soon
Sorry mate get well soon. Oh and sue the Fugger.
A big thanks to Johny, Steve, Ian and Stem for Saturday for all your help at the first South London Bike Show.
It was greatly appreciated and I hope you had a good day. We were indeed lucky with the weather. Lots of good feedback from persons who did the ride out.
We look forward to the next years event which will be bigger and better together with lessons learned.
Thank you.
If you have any suggestions for improving etc please feel free to drop Mark or myself a line.
Thank you once again.
Event was really enjoyable an excellent format and I would be only to willing to get involved again next year. Just sorry I couldn't stay any longer.
The Route
The route was good for those that had some level of experience but it proved to be a touch intimidating for L riders or those that had little practice or experience. Might I suggest that we group together inexperienced and learner riders and take them on an alternate route? They could of cause take the more complex route later in the day if they wish.
The Briefing.
It was not made clear who would brief the riders before the start of each ride. I did this as a matter of course but other USR’s may have believed it was the responsibility of either the Phoenix instructor or the IAM observer. The IAM observer and USR should talk before the ride and then act as a team and try and assess the rider’s ability before the ride and choose an appropriate route and pace.
Starting the ride.
After the first couple of rides someone (I think it was a Phoenix Instructor) took responsibility at the start point and did a great job. Simple instructions to us ‘You will take that rider, that rider and he/she will be the observer. You leave in 5 mins’
The Debriefing
I did sit in on a couple of debriefings to the riders and I believe that too much emphasis was placed on the ‘box ticking’. I believe the best way of engaging riders is by dialogue not treating them as they are still at school. This is particularly important with younger riders who we really need to encourage to undertake advanced tution. Also NEVER criticize a rider in front of another, all this does is decrease confidence and morale.
Thanks again Wynne
Stem
Morning all.
EventGreat event and I too enjoyed it a lot. I had a lot of fun and bumped into several folk I knew.
One of our Lam snr Observers was enjoying the Ducatis !
Route
Yep would agree with Stem the route probably was a tad intimidating for learners.
Addington is a difficult place to get out of though not many choices unless you like Trams !
Briefing and start
I didnt get involved in any briefings I assumed the Phoenix guys were doing that
I think it was Steve that was at the start and yes he did a great job liasing with us.
Wynne and I managed to get our radios working and were in contact so I was able to slow my ride
down if needed or at the Roadworks in Biggin Hill for instance I didnt filter. And grouped us together.
Certainly room for improvement with the comms between the Phoenix guys.
Debrief
I only had one opportunity to sit in on one debrief with a Kent Observer who I know anyway,David.
The particular ride was two recent DAS passes.then we had some others tail along which was disconcerting at first.
Because we thought another faster group had caught us up.But we were able to sort it out as we had comms.
Difficult with a debrief to give balanced feedback and encouragement.
I didnt want to tread on anybodys toes but there was a young lad I managed to engage in conversation about his regular
riding habits.I did want to tell him to use a lower gear as in my mirrors I saw him drfit over the white line a couple of times
We went going quick either.Quite alarming.
How were the Ducati boys operating ? They were doing there own thing I think.
One item about the route. I think Steve had probs with it. I recently up graded my TYRE software and since then
I have had no further problems with routes going straight into my Garmin.
I would like to help out again....and werent we lucky with the weather.
The route worked perfectly on my TomTom
H All.
I'm so sorry that I couldn't make this event, my bl**dy shift pattern got in the way. Glad you had a good day for it though.
Apologies - John T.
Steve Phillips was having issues with the route....not sure what system he was using ?
I opened the gpx file in Mapsource and then uploaded to the Zumo. Even in Mapsource it was showing straight lines until I forced it to recalculate, that option didn't work on my unit though. In this case it didn't matter as I know the area.
Think it was the first time I've actually managed to successfully use my radio - worked well on the laps I did when Wynne was observing.
Matching riders before hand, I believe is important. My first lap had an experienced advanced rider on a demo bike with a lad on a 125, wasn't fair on anyone in the group.
Think I was greedy, did 8 laps - one way to get over my dislike of Skill Hill lane ::)
There were are a variety of riding abilities which helped keep the day interesting, having just got back from a stint with two not so confidant 125 riders, I went out with 3 on demo bikes (the obs was also on a demo), thinking they'd be wanting to try the bikes more than the observation and realising the riders were quite competent, I lead a 'spirited' ride - everyone enjoyed it. :)
As has been mentioned having some info on ability before hand would have helped. Also a plan on how to handle disparate riders i.e. do we attempt to keep the group together and stifle the more capable rider - these are issues for the observers really, they can't asses riders they can't see.
I got the impression some were there to ride the demos and were not necessarily interested in a report back - possibly this should be established before the ride .
Had no probs with my radio once I had plugged it in properly !
