Title: Air Ambulance Double 100 Cycle Challenge - 10th June 2012
Post by: Jeffrey on May 18, 2012, 09:56:55 AM
Sorry for the late posting.

We have been asked again to support the Air Ambulance Cycle Ride.

details on the web site: http://www.kssairambulance.org.uk/FundRaising/Double100 (http://www.kssairambulance.org.uk/FundRaising/Double100)

We need eight or more USRs (to work in pairs) to ride around the route offering support and encouragement to the cyclists.  To make sure the route is correctly posted and give first aid when required.

It would be great to have a static controller at Dunsfold for the day too.

Please add your name to this thread and I will provide further details in the next week.

Thanks,
Jeffrey.

This was a very enjoyable, if very long, day last year. If I am free I will come along, but need to check my commitments first.

I can now confirm I am definitely available to support this. Last year was very much a lot of good fun. Riding 100+ miles on mainly quiet back lanes across Surrey, Sussex and Kent.

Great news Julian.
I hope a few more USRs will sign up for this.  If you are available please consider adding your name to this thread.

I propose that we meet outside the pub at 0700hrs, same as last year.  We can then proceed to the start point on the aerodrome.

Has this been sent out on email? As we know there are plenty of USRs who do not follow threads on here.

Two riders is not enough to cover 100 miles of roads.

Yes it was sent as were all the other forthcoming events complete with dates and it is also in the calendar on here.  It just seems people are not able to give their time. Am at the moment drafting a reminder mail, but if people are not available there is not much we can do.

I understand that real lives get in the way, I am as guilty of that as anyone, but if anything like last year this is a big job and deserves our support to get it right. It was also probably the USR job I have enjoyed the most. Over 100 miles of Surrey, Sussex and Kent back lanes making sure the cyclists are all OK and getting the support they need.

I agree with everything that Julian has said it was a great run last year and we were made most welcome. Sadly i now live in Lincolnshire and to be there for 7am i would have to leave home about 2.30am. makes a long day of it.
Have fun
Bob

I have managed to rope in a friend (potential USR) to assist, but we will not be able to offer the kind of support I would like with only three of us attending.  So, if you think you may be able to help, but can't make the start time, please do consider joining the ride along the route (on the web site, link above).  Call me to let me know where you are on the day.

Bob, you have a very reasonable excuse for not making the 7am start - but you could be here for lunch.  Only joking.  You will be missed for sure.

Jeffrey.

Huge THANK YOU to Paul Hilton, Julian Barker and Terry Wensley (non USR) for helping make this charity ride a success.
With just the four of us to ride the 100mile and 100k routes, we were still able to offer assistance where needed and encourage those covering the same routes without engines powering their wheels.

The weather turned out to be much more favourable than expected, with only light rain scattered throughout the day.

Only two cyclists did not make it back by the 6pm deadline and required picking up by the Air Ambulance ground transport vehicle.

It was great to ride around some of the most pleasant roads in Surrey, Sussex and Kent.

I hope the day raised a large amount for the charity.  I will advise when the final figures are announced.

Jeffrey.

Like last year, really good fun. To give some idea what is involved whilst running car keys to turn off a cyclist's lights, calling in Halfords to deliver an inner tube, marking a badly signed corner on the route, searching the Surrey Hills mobile phone dead zone for a bike with collapsed wheel bearings, and consuming free gastro pub coffee with marshmallows floating in it, here is my track of the day.

Looks like you rode some good roads on Sunday. Unfortunately, I've been laid up with the chest cold that's doing the rounds or I would have joined you.

I might have a look at nicking that route for the next X9OC ride I organise 8)

Sorry folks I was on holiday too.
Agree with what Julian has said about folk not following the threads here.
But Pen has been emailing us all too.
Glad it all went well on the day but sounds like you may have been stretched.
Next one is Chinnor ?

Message from Air Ambulance:-

Dear Jeff,
I wanted to write to say a huge thank you to you and your fellow support riders for your outstanding help at our Double 100 Cycle Challenge last weekend. I’m really sorry not to have written before but I got flattened by a chest infection and have only just surfaced!
Please can you pass on my sincere thanks to each rider as you really did a sterling job helping the cyclists out and marshalling the various points. We really appreciate you all giving up your precious time and please pass on my personal thanks.
I’ll let you know as and when we have a full update on the amount raised from the day.

I look forward to working closely with you and the others on the Motorbike Run on 30 September.

Kind regards,
Corinne Hitching

A real pleasure to be invloved again in this event. A very good way of showing USRs off to the wider non motorcycle public and like last year really good fun to ride these routes and to be a genuine help to riders.
